strict html breaks style

I'm incorporating the calendar in a WordPress CMS installation and it seems to work wonderfully with one exception: strict html breaks the border shading style. It displays just fine using transitional but the rest of the installation is built with strict so I'd like to keep it that way.

Any ideas or thoughts on how to fix this cosmetic detail to comply with strict html?
